The Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) sector has grown to be one of the most diverse sectors in business. Undergraduates, career changers, returning OFWs – almost everyone seems to find a place in BPO. If an artist will paint the sector, he/she will surely use a variant of colors in filling the canvas.
In the International Business Process Association of the Philippines’ (IBPAP) General Membership Assembly Meeting held last June 26, a new addition that will make the BPO sector even more colorful was welcomed. Persons With Disability (PWDs) now have the opportunity to work in the sector through the Project DI (Diversity and Inclusion) of the IBPAP, Contact Center Association of the Philippines (CCAP), Unilab Foundation and Edulynx Corporation. The Project DI aims to place eighteen thousand PWDs in the workforce by the year 2022.

Following a program called WISE which stands for Workplace Inclusion and Sustainable Employment, leaders of the Project DI will source PWDs with the help of Local Government Units (LGUs). Initially, they will collaborate with LGUs from Pasig, Makati, Quezon City, and Mandaluyong. Eventually, they will also collaborate with LGUs from Marikina, Muntinlupa and much more. Sourced PWDs from these areas will then undergo training for BPO jobs.
The number of PWDs that a participating company needs to hire must be one percent of its total number of employees. So if it has five hundred employees, it needs to take in five PWDs. It will also pay the usual placement fee for every successful hire. The accumulated money will be used to sustain the Project DI. Currently, there are about nine BPO firms that participate in the program.
Stakeholders can see all the activities of the Project DI through an online portal called empowerment.ph. They can also see the profiles of the PWD graduates there.

This news is just one of those that can’t help but put a smile across your face. PWDs now have more opportunities to explore their capabilities. Hopefully, more projects like this will come in the future.
BPO Sector of the Philippines
When looking for the best outsourcing destinations across the globe, the Philippines can’t be missed. The country has been included in various rosters of the top outsourcing locations in the world. Some of the most recent milestones of the country as an outsourcing hub are:
- Seventh in the 2017 A.T. Kearney Global Services Location Index
- Third in the 2017 Tholons Services Globalization Index
- Fourth most tech-ready country in Southeast Asia
- Ranked 39th in the 2017 Global Cybersecurity Index
While India is usually preferred for IT-related functions, the Philippines remains to be the number one in voice-related BPO services. This includes customer service, appointment setting, and lead generation. In another blog, we have expounded on the primary reasons why. But in a nutshell, it’s because of the following traits of its workforce:
- Accent neutrality
- Proficiency in speaking the English language
- Strong work ethics
- Rich western influences
